ABbreviation Compass HELP

ABbreviation Compass

Telecommunications, mobilecom, electronic and computer-techniques play an ever-increasing role in our life: they are converging! A technical language surrounding these fields has developed that dominates the specialised terminology in science and technology. Completely understood only by a small group of specialists who use it daily, this terminology is problematic for the layman touching on a subject or starting to learn the terminology. This collection of abbreviations has been developed over many years - at first only for my pe rsonal requirements. After multiple request I decided publish it so that others who also suffer from abbreviations have the possibility to orientate themselves in the modern technical environment. English is well established as the medium for technical terminology in the fields of telecommunication, mobilecom, electronics, computer-techniques, etc. For this reason mainly English expressions can be found in this database.

A lot of expressions/explanations can be applied to more than one field, e. g. »Magnetic Tape Unit«: audio, computer or tv-radio. I have included only the most commonly ones.

It is possible that some of the expressions/explanations are no longer valid or incorrect (Murphy is everywhere). Please inform me in this case. Thanks in advance.

Some of the abbreviations are no longer in use (e. g. due to newer technologies). I have left them in the database for the sake of completeness. Moreover old books often remain on the bookshelf for some time.

I abstained from translating English expressions into German or other languages as this is time consuming and the expression often exists in English.

Some of the abbreviations are in such common use that they are accepted as set terms. In order to ensure easy reading I did not write them out in full.

Some of the expressions/explanations (e. g. center/centre, gray/grey) are spelled in different ways, depending on wether American or British English was used.

Some of the expressions/explanations were not available to me – here I need your help to fill this gaps in the next update. I am always grateful when corrections are given or errors pointed out.

Some of the abbreviations, expressions/explanations are in general use. I have included them here, as they play a role in professional or daily life.

Abbreviations are ether in singular or plural.

Licence plates, area-codes and inhabitants were last updated Dec. 1990, the next update takes place as soon as possible.

Some companies are listed without location, as this information was lacking or had changed.

I thank all those who supported me to enlarge or correct this collection.
Horst Werner, engineer of telecommunications
